In Genesis 2 and 3, the word “free” appears for the first time. Man is said to be “free” in a very limited sense. And when we examine all the passages of Scripture that use such words as “free,” “freedom,” “liberty,” etc., we find the same meaning. We are “liberated” and “freed” from sin unto obedience to God. There is no concept of being “freed” from God in the Bible. • Freedom: John 8:32, 33, 36; Romans 6:7, 18–22; Galatians 5:1 • Liberty: Romans 8:21; 2 Corinthians 3:17; Galatians 2:4; 5:1, 13
